Rate My Subway ("we", "us") is an app for rating New York City subway stations. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. We keep it short and plain on purpose.
What we collect
- Account info. When you sign in with Apple we receive a unique account identifier and, if you choose to share them, your name and email address. Apple may give us a private relay email instead of your real one. We never show your email to anyone.
- Your display name. The name you choose is shown publicly next to your reviews and on your profile.
- Your reviews. Star ratings, text, tags, photos and videos you post are public. Anyone using the app can see them, and they may appear in images people share.
- Location. If you allow it, the app uses your location on your phone to find the stations near you. When you post a review, your location is used to check how far you are from the station so we can mark the review "at station". We store only that distance and the "at station" badge, not your coordinates, and we don't keep a history of where you go.
- Activity on the service. Reports you submit about reviews, riders you block, and basic technical logs (such as IP address, the page or feature requested, and the time) that help us keep the service running and secure. Logs are kept for a short period.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your personal information.
- We don't show ads or use advertising trackers.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
How we use information
- To run the app: show stations, ratings, rankings, profiles and reviews.
- To enforce one review per station every 30 days and other rules.
- To moderate content: review reports, hide or remove content that breaks our community rules, and ban abusive accounts.
- To keep the service secure and fix problems.
Who we share it with
Public content (your display name, reviews, photos, videos) is visible to everyone. Otherwise we share information only with service providers that run the app for us, under their own privacy and security terms:
- Supabase, which stores our database and the photos and videos.
- Railway, which hosts our server.
- Apple, which provides Sign in with Apple and distributes the app.
We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.
Contacting officials
The app can help you write a message to the MTA or elected officials. Those messages are sent by you, through your own email app, browser or social media account. We don't send them for you and we don't see what you send.
Your choices
- Delete a review any time from its ••• menu.
- Delete your account from Profile → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, reviews, photos and videos.
- Location can be turned off in iPhone Settings → Rate My Subway. You can still rate stations by picking them on the map.
- Questions or requests (for example, to get a copy of your data): email support@ratemysubway.com.
Retention
We keep your account and reviews until you delete them or your account. Deleted reviews are removed from the app; a minimal record that you rated a station on a given date is kept so the 30-day rule still works, and is removed when you delete your account.
Children
Rate My Subway is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
